Celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II in Olkusz

On behalf of the Mayor of Olkusz and the President of the City Council, we would like to invite all residents, non-governmental organisations, as well as veteran associations to our celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II and a military rally, which will take place on the 1st of September in Olkusz Market Square.

The official part of the event will begin with a Mass celebrated at the Minor Basilica of St Andrew the Apostle in Olkusz at 10:00 a.m. Following the mass, the participants will be joined by the Olkusz Representative Brass Band and will head to the Monument in the city park, where they will be able to participate in the main part of the celebrations. In addition to that, a military rally is slated to take place from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., which will offer the participants an opportunity to get acquainted with historical and contemporary Polish army presented in an interesting and attractive way.

The event will coincide with the opening of an impressive open-air exhibition entitled “Olkusz and Olkusz Land during World War II.” There will be no shortage of stands and equipment of military units taking part in the rally. Another big attraction will be the educational zone and the “100 years of Polish military aviation” exhibition, prepared by the Air Force Museum in Dęblin. One of the attractions will be a seat from a modern-era military aircraft, which will make every participant feel like a real pilot. The Market Square will also host stands of collectors of military items, as well as re-enactment groups. The organisers also envisioned numerous games and activities for children. The participants will also be able to attend free screenings of World War II documentaries. The celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II will be concluded by an evening concert of patriotic songs, presented by local Te Deum band.
